Hat Band Facts & Options:
Care for your feather hat band:
- Your feather hat band can last for many years if it is cared for and stored properly. Your hatband can remain on the hat but placing the entire hat in a plastic bag will protect the hatband from “critters” that will destroy the feathers. Keep your hatband away from your cat!!! Some cats (and dogs!) love to chew on the feathers & if they do, your hatband will be beyond repair!
- If the feathers get rumpled, placing them 6” above a pot of steaming water or tea kettle will straighten them out in a matter or seconds. Let feathers dry untouched for several minutes.
- If the feathers are soiled, try steaming first then gently wipe in direction of feather. It may several attempts to remove foreign matter. When clean, steam as above to retain natural shape.
- If feathers break there is little that can be done. Fabric glue may work in some cases.

I began making my jewelry and hat bands in 1972. My then husband went pheasant hunting and brought back the untreated pelts. He thought I would like to work with the feathers as I was always making art & crafts. My first project was actually a hat band on a scrap of leather and airplane glue! It was not very good but it wasn't long before I figured out how to rearrange the feathers in a pleasing design. I also worked on technical issues like the best kind of glue and how to get the feathers to stick to the leather.
Shortly after I began working with the feathers I had gotten, my brother who was and still is a traveling salesman to resorts and tourist areas all over the Rocky Mountains, asked me to make jewelry with the feathers and gave me a crude choker on leather he had purchased to have me copy. It was really rough and I figured I could do better. That's how it began and within a few years, I had to hire several people to help me make hat bands to meet the growing demand and others to package the finished products.
In 2002, I put my feather jewelry on eBay and a couple of years later, I taught myself how to make a web site. It took awhile but i now have a group of loyal customers and have new customers all the time, all of whom have told me how much they love the creations I have made.
